Day 5: Learning Activities and Environment

Learning Activities

Learning Activities, also known as Instructional Activities, are experiences designed specifically to aid students in learning (Brown & Green, 2020). These activities present events or interactions which allow learners to gain knowledge, skills, or insight through participation in problem-solving or critical thinking work.

Some examples of Learning Activities include (Brown & Green, 2020):

  • Instructional Games
  • Identification of Similarities or Differences
  • Classification of Information or Objects
  • Summarization and Note-Taking
  • Reinforcement through Recognition of Effort
  • Homework and Practice
  • Visual Representation
  • Cooperative Learning
  • Setting Objectives with Feedback
  • Setting and Testing Hypotheses
  • Questions, Cues, and Organization

Learning Environments

A Learning Environment is the setting in which instructors, leaners, and content are brought together. It is not just a physical location, but an idea, shaped by the type of learning that needs to occur and other factors (Brown & Green, 2020).

There are four types of Learning Environments (Brown & Green, 2020):

Learner-Centered

Focused on skills, knowledge, attitudes, and beliefs that learner brings to the environment. Instructors use the learner’s pre-held ideas to create situations where the learner can form new ideas or beliefs about the content.

Knowledge-Centered

Focused on providing activities and information which help learners develop an understanding through exposure to well-organized knowledge.

Assessment-Centered

Focused on creating opportunities for instructors to provide feedback and make revisions to the learner’s understanding through the use of testing and critique.

Community-Centered

Focused on creating opportunities for individuals to learn from one-another. Connections between the instructional setting and outside world give the content greater relevance and meaning to the learners and may give them the opportunity to feel a connection to larger societies of people who share commonalities.
